What is Kidney Function Test?

Kidney function test in Delhi are used to assess whether your kidneys are functioning properly or not. The main function of kidneys is to eliminate waste products from your body through urine excretion. In the kidney function tests blood samples and urine samples are checked to provide information on the health of your kidneys and the efficiency with which wastes are eliminated from the body. All the tests which provide report on the efficient functioning of kidneys are together known as kidney function tests or kidney panel or maybe renal function test.

Here is a list of some other tests that are included in kidney panel along with their reference ranges.

Serum Creatinine:

Creatinine is a waste product that results from the regular breakdown of muscle tissue and the digestion of the protein in your food. Your kidneys are the organs that eliminate it from your body. Because it might vary according on your age, sex, body size, and other characteristics, it can be difficult to determine what constitutes a “normal” creatinine level in the blood. A lower score performs better on this test. Chronic renal disease or acute kidney damage may both be indicated by high creatinine levels.

Serum urea:

Urea is the end product of protein breakdown and is produced in liver by means of urea cycle. Urea undergoes filtration at the glomerulus level and secretion as well as reabsorption at the tubular level. The rise in level of serum urea is generally seen as marker of renal dysfunction and especially glomerular dysfunction. Urea level only rises when glomerular dysfunction is reduced below 50%. Hence blood urea is not an excellent marker of renal dysfunction as it rises quite late in the dysfunction and its rise is also not exclusive to kidney dysfunction.

Serum Electrolytes:

Electrolytes are electrically charged molecules that are essential for regular bodily functions like neuron and muscle contraction; they also assist in controlling the body’s fluid balance and preserving the acid-base equilibrium. Serum electrolytes includes sodium, potassium and chloride. Any of these electrolyte imbalances may indicate a major health issue, such as kidney illness, hypertension, or a potentially fatal heart rhythm irregularity. The test may also be performed to determine whether your body has an imbalance in fluid levels or in the amounts of acid and base.

Phosphorus:

High phosphorus is frequently an indicator of renal illness or injury. By eliminating any excess phosphorus from your blood, healthy kidneys maintain a healthy level of phosphorus in your body. Your kidneys might not be able to filter out additional phosphorus if you have kidney disease. Phosphorus is a mineral that is essential for the production of energy, for the health of muscles and nerves, and for the development of bones. It also serves as a buffer, keeping the body’s acid-base balance in check.

Calcium:

One of the most vital minerals in the body is calcium, which is required for blood clotting, bone formation, and the healthy operation of muscles, neurons, and the heart. Low vitamin D levels brought on by CKD are also associated with low serum calcium. As a result, low serum calcium could indicate that vitamin D levels are too low, which would indicate that kidney function is declining and approaching kidney failure.

Albumin:

About 60% of the blood’s protein is made up of the protein known as albumin, which plays a number of important tasks in the body, including transporting calcium ions, hormones, vitamins, and medications as well as keeping fluid from leaking out of blood vessels. You can be malnourished if your albumin level is low. It might also indicate that you have an inflammatory illness, liver disease, or kidney disease.

Urine Albumin-Creatinine Ratio (uACR) Test

The urine albumin-creatinine ratio (uACR) test counts the amounts of albumin (a protein) and creatinine in your urine. Healthy kidneys filter creatinine into the urine while maintaining albumin levels in the blood. As a result, your urine should contain extremely little to no albumin. By dividing the amount of urine albumin by the amount of urine creatinine, one can compute the uACR. A uACR level considered “normal” is less than 30 mg/g. A lower score performs better on this test. A result of 30 mg/g or greater for the uACR can indicate albuminuria.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kidney function tests are used to assess whether your kidneys are functioning properly or not. The main function of kidneys is to eliminate waste products from your body through urine excretion. If they are not doing their function properly then you need to take charge of it.

The first sign to appear in kidney dysfunction is dizziness and fatigue. The first possible signs of weakening kidneys is the experience of overall weakness in your body. The second sign maybe Swelling (Edema) and last but not the least you may notice changes in urination.

There are mainly two types of kidney function tests that is glomerular function test and tubular function tests. As per the type of sample material used to perform the test, it can either be blood test for kidney function and urine test for kidney function.
