Lipid Profile Test Lab in Hauz Khas, Delhi
What is Lipid Profile Test?
A lipid profile test measures different types of lipid in your blood. Lipid profile measures the levels of four different type of cholesterol and tryglycerides. A lipid profile measures these lipids:
- Total cholesterol
- LDL (“bad”) cholesterol
- HDL (“good”) cholesterol
- Triglycerides
Why Lipid Profile Test is done?
The test is typically ordered by your healthcare provider as part of routine health check-up or if the patient has risk factors for heart disease such as obesity, diabetes or family history of heart disease.
What is cholesterol?
Cholesterol which is a type of LIPID, is a waxy fat-like substance that your liver produces naturally. Cholesterol is essential to your body to stay healthy as it supports functions in your body. Cholesterl does not dissolve in water, hence can be carried through your blood on its own. But our liver produces lipoproteins as well, to transport cholesterol through your body. Based on lipoprotein cholesterol can be of two types:
- 1)LDL ( Low density lipoproteins) cholesterol
- 2)HDL(High density lipoproteins)cholesterol
High cholesterol rarely causes symptoms initially. Hence it is very important to get your cholesterol levels checked at regular basis. One such pathology lab is GenX DIAGNOSTICS located at Sarvpriya Vihar, Hauz Khas for Lipid Profile test.
Any cholesterol carried by low density lipoprotein is called LDL cholesterol. Similarly the cholesterol carried by high level lipoproteins is HDL cholesterol.
LDL CHOLESTEROL are basically left behind scrap once beneficial cholesterol has been used, or maybe you can call it “bad cholesterol” our body wants to get rid of. It is called “bad cholesterol” because it builds up plaque in the artery walls. Plaque is the deposit that hardens and narrows down the arteries. This may lead to possible future heart attack or stroke.
HDL CHOLESTEROL are in contrast the “good cholesterol”. HDL absorbs cholesterol in blood and carries it back to liver. The liver then excretes it out from the body. As the level of HDL in blood rises, the risk of heart disease and stroke decreases proportionately.
What are Triglycerides?
Triglyceride is also a type of lipid that circulates in your blood. Triglycerides are most common type of fat in your body. Apart from the food you eat triglycerides also come from extra calories your body does not need right away. These unused calories are stored in fat cells in the form of triglycerides. Whenever your body needs more of energy it releases the triglycerides. Some amount of triglycerides are important for good health, but high levels again can raise your risk for heart disease and stroke.
What can be interpreted from Lipid Profile Test?
To interpret the results your overall health and other risk factors are considered.
The values are measured in milligram per decilitre. The optimal level for each part of the standard lipid test are listed below:
- Total cholesterol: Below 200 mg/dL
- HDL (good) cholesterol: Above 60 mg/dL
- LDL (bad) cholesterol: Below 100 mg/dL (For people with diabetes: Below 70 mg/dL)
- Triglycerides: Below 150 mg/Dl
To measure total cholesterol the sum of LDL and HDL is taken.
